What format does itunes download in

I’m a little confused. I buy my music on iTunes Store and then it shows up in my Apple Music and I play it from there. What format would that be downloaded in? I can tell it’s not CD quality but idk what it is or if there’s a way to upgrade the quantity w/o an Apple Music subscription. Tia

Most are 256k AAC format, which is pretty comparable to CD quality, even though it is still a compressed format. Some older songs before 2010 may be found to use 128K DRM protected formats. The Apple Music subscription does allow for Lossless and Dolby Spatial Audio formats for even better sound quality.
