Can my iPhone be hacked via bluetooth?

I have heard of Bluetooth hacking and was told by someone that this kind of hacking was old school. However, my Bluetooth gets hacked into almost evey day. How can I prevent this if my Bluetooth is always off but my connect still remains open?
