why does my icloud password not work on my MAC but works on both my iphone and ipad!?

My MAC doesn't seem to recognise my icloud password! It works for a while until I've forgotten it and for whatever reason my laptop has too so I have to reset it and end up having to reset it multiple times as the stupid MAC doesn't recognise it each time!

It frustrates me so much I want to throw this bloody MAC across the room!

The MAC is old! I think it's a 2012 edition and the software no longer updates it's that old, is that the reason it won't allow me to log into icloud?? seems nuts that would be the reason but I can't think of any other reason!

If the software is any Older then macOS Sierra you Cannot log in with your Apple id with 2 factor authentication enabled. Please receive a verification code on another Apple device such as an iPhone via settings>log in and security>get verification code. Please put this code where you would normally put the password.
