Prudmaple, thank you for the response. Was Apple able to give you any information as to what they did to cause this problem, essentially, did they find the root cause of the problem? If I understand this correctly, you had to go to an Apple Store to have them fix the phone?!

  1. I hope/expect this was covered under warranty and they did not charge you
  2. There were 14 people who clicked on "Me too," why aren't there more?
  3. Are you still using the same iPhone, so it was not replaced by Apple and this could happen again?
  4. I still expect that Apple will respond in this thread, can you provide the details for anyone in Apple support who is familiar with this problem?

This exact same thing happened to me today, December 17, 2023. I assumed Apple had worked out the bugs regarding the iOS 17.2 update, so I decided to update my iPhone 15 Pro, big mistake. The screen is no longer responding to any input. The side buttons work. iTunes says the phone is in DFU mode, even though the screen says "Your iPhone has been updated to iOS 17.2."

I use a VPN on my phone (Proton VPN). Does anyone else who has had this non-responsive screen issue use a VPN? I changed the password for my VPN, figuring that the phone would not be able to login using it. This did not help. I read on another website that this problem may be related to how this update interacts with a VPN.

My PSA: do not trade-in your old phone! It's better to throw it in a drawer! I'm going to be able to call AT&T and switch back to my iPhone 7. I only had to add my work email and Slack back onto my iPhone 7 and I'm able to continue working and go on my holiday vacation.

Meanwhile, we need a fix from Apple.

after my iPhone got in dfu status , seemed no way to to get it back without restore it to factory settings. And the process was verified by apple support. Then when I tried to restore it I got error said iPhone 15 pro max “ firmware file corrupted, it can’t be restored”. I did updated my iMac hour before connecting iPhone to iMac, looks both iOS 17.2 and venture 13.6.3 were weird. I chatted and called Apple support, no fix. I went to Apple Store the same day , they used iMac restore my iPhone- I checked the iMac iOS version, it has not been updated yet. Anyway, lots trouble , lost all information on the phone, gave trouble to Apple Watch, spent about 12 hours….

This problem is more widespread than you would believe from this one thread. Prudmaple, I know that you have already lost all of your data. I'm including these details for posterity and for those, like myself, who have not yet lost their data as a result of Apple's defective updates. I switched back to my iPhone 7 to use while I explore my options for my iPhone 15 Pro.

There is a thread that is specifically for iOS 17.2 (your thread was re-titled by the moderator).

Screen not responding after iOS 17.2 upda… - Apple Community

There are also previous iPhones that were bricked by updates, the link to that thread is below:

There are a few reoccurring themes:

  1. Apple support is completely useless. The Apple tech I spoke to "never heard of this happening before."
  2. There's a chance that this could be fixed by using a Mac. Something called the Apple Configurator needs to be used to restore the previous firmware revision, but it's only available for MacOS. It can be done at an Apple Store. If successful, you may not lose all your data. I've pieced this together based on other iPhone 15 Pros having the same issue, but as a result of other firmware updates.
