For now I don't think there's much point in looking at what the About tells you. If you return to the Main menu (by pressing the Menu button) and from there go to the Music menu rather than Settings, that's where you should find the music.

If there's nothing listed in the Music menu it suggests that the content of the iPod has become corrupted.

The only method to add music or videos to that model of iPod is via iTunes, but note that iTunes cannot be used to retrieve music or videos from the iPod. So is iTunes installed on your computer? Is it the same iTunes that was used to add content to the iPod originally?

If it is the same iTunes Library, then connect the iPod to the computer and when iTunes sees it, use iTunes to manage the iPod. I recommend using the Sync method, rather than Manually Manage. You can either follow the manual I linked to (see Chapter 2, Music Features, starting on page 17 of that guide) or continue with help here. That chapter tells you how to add music to your iTunes Library and then copy it to your iPod.

If your current iTunes is not the same library that was used to manage the iPod originally then you will not be able to access or use the music on the iPod by using iTunes, even if the iPod's content is usable. In this situation, I suggest that you simply start afresh. Once you have music in your current iTunes Library, add it to the iPod. The Sync process will remove all existing content from the iPod, whether it's playable or not.

Although I can l point you to a version of the user manual, which might help, you might get more immediate help here.

The manual I've found is here on the Apple website: https://manuals.info.apple.com/MANUALS/0/MA282/en_US/iPod_classic_Features_Guide.pdf

It may not be the correct one though, but as long as you have an iPod Classic, it should help a bit.

In the meantime, let's try offering some suggestions here.

If you've looked through the music and video menus on the iPod but found nothing, that suggests that there is no content on the iPod.

You can only add music and video to that model by using iTunes if you have a Windows PC, or older Mac using OS Mojave (10:14) or earlier. If you have a Mac using OS Catalina (10:15) or later, you use Finder instead of iTunes.

So the first thing to establish is whether you have a Windows desktop to laptop computer? If so, do you have iTunes installed on it? If not, download it from the following link: Download and use iTunes for Windows 10 - Apple Support

If you have:

  • an older Mac, iTunes should already be on it
  • new Mac, you will find Finder already installed

Post back with your progress and we can go through what to do next.

Ok I’m using a windows machine. The point is that although the “about” line shows that there are 101 songs on the unit and 1 video, when I go to the music line and click it doesn’t show any songs, etc. what I’ve been getting is a page that shows settings for music like songs —on/off

clicking the select wheel just turns the particular settings to either on or off, nothing else. Same with all the other settings.
