HomePod mini “Setup Failed (-5303)”—What is going on?

I was trying to set up a HomePod mini for a client (which means that I will not be able to try suggestions until my next appointment with her). Her iPhone was on iOS 16.x, still, but I don’t know, whether it has something to do with it.

I factory-reset her HomePod mini and then commenced with setup through her phone. We got to the point, where she entered her Apple ID password on her iPhone, after which the setup process continued for a short time, until it displayed this:

A web search revealed nothing about Error -5303.

I am also experiencing these symptoms + getting this error code on one HomePod, and error code -5320 on another. Here are the things I've tried:

  • Changing our wireless network's security from WPA3-Personal to WPA2-PSK (AES).
  • Enabling the 2.4 GHz wireless network.
  • Factory resetting the HomePods using a Mac.
  • Factory resetting the HomePods using an older firmware (17.1.1 in this case).
  • Completely erasing and starting a new home in the Home app.
  • Trying setup on a different device.

Both devices used to attempt setup were running iOS/iPadOS 17.2.

I'm totally stumped. Any direction would be helpful.

I worked with Apple Support today and they were able to help me. Donald was super patient and helped with all the troubleshooting.

We were able to resolve the issue by disconnecting the wireless extenders in the house, then rebooting the modem and router--leaving the extenders unplugged. For my network, this could be due to buggy firmware in the extenders, which is pretty common for Netgear equipment 😩 so I would highly recommend trying this if you have this sort of network configuration.

If you don't, it still wouldn't hurt to try restarting the modem and router. Unplug both, wait 30 seconds, plug in the modem and wait for it to fully boot and connect, and finally the router. Let me know whether or not this helps, and I'll keep digging for an answer if not.
