Can there be unlimited people in a text group? Why are some people left out of the messages?

We have 20 people in a group text when we try to add more than 20, it won’t let us send to the 21st person. Also not everybody is getting the messages.

not everyone is using an iPhone, but it seems that everyone should be getting the messages if they have Wi-Fi or cellular service turned on.

If there are any users who don’t have an iPhone a group message is limited by the SMS/MMS carrier. Here are some of the limitations:

  • The number of users of SMS/MMS is small number, and varies with who the carrier is. Typically, under 6.
  • You can have up to 31 iPhone users.
  • Once the group is set up you cannot add or remove any users.

These are all restrictions of the SMS/MMS standard, and are not under Apple’s control. Thus, SMS/MMS and iMessage mixed groups are not a good way to manage group communications. There are many other much better choices:

  • WhatsApp
  • Facebook Messenger
  • Skype
  • Google Meet
  • Telegram
  • Signal

Another very flexible option is a “listserver” such as Groups.io. It is free for small groups of up to 100.
