How to Convert PDF to PNG on a Mac Computer?

I need to convert a PDF file to PNG format on my Mac computer. However, I am unsure about the steps and methods to do this effectively on my Mac. I have tried searching online for solutions, but the information is overwhelming, and I'm not sure which method would work best and be the easiest for someone with limited technical knowledge like me. I want to preserve the quality of the images in the PDF file and ensure that the conversion process is smooth and efficient.

Can anyone provide a simple and reliable method or software recommendation to convert PDF to PNG on a Mac?

Preview and LibreOffice are two free software you can use to convert PDF to PNG.

The easiest way is to use Preview. Open the PDF file in Preview, select File -> Export, and then choose PNG format. You can set parameters like resolution and then export your PDF to PNG.

You can also use online PDF converters. But some require an account to download the converted file, and some may compress the file quality to optimize processing speed. This can make it challenging to find the the most suitable tool quickly. Nevertheless, they are very convenient for one-time use.

If you have more professional needs for handling or converting PDFs, you can get a dedicated PDF editor, such as Adobe, PDFgear, PDF Expert. These tools offer PDF to image conversion and support a variety of other PDF editing and conversion functions, providing more comprehensive features.

Here is a link to a macOS Shortcut that allows you to right-click on a PDF, select Quick Actions from the secondary menu, and is named Split PDF into Images. You just need a new folder on your Desktop named PDF_Images where the PNG images will be deposited. This is a solution intended for Monterey and later operating systems where Shortcuts have been introduced by Apple.

Right-click on the link above and choose Open link in Shortcuts. You will see the following:

You may see the following dialog when you first run this Shortcut which you would choose OK.

And the individual PDF pages will appear as images immediately thereafter.

Here is the example output from one of my 4 page PDFs:

Shortcuts written and tested on macOS Sonoma 14.4.1 may not work properly on macOS Monterey owing to the earlier implementation of Shortcuts technology on Monterey. Case in point, this Split PDF into Images shortcut fails when installed on Monterey because one action in the work flow is removed and one has to make additional adjustments in the workflow. This Shortcut expects the folder PDF_Images on the Desktop to work properly.

Sonoma:

Monterey version (iCloud link to install the Shortcut on Monterey) tested on 12.7.4.

In either case, selecting one or more PDFs in the Finder and then right-clicking on that selection to choose Quick Actions > Split PDF into Images (Monterey) will generate PNG images of those PDF pages in the PDF_Images folder.

I've researched this same question and there are a number of solutions out there exactly like this one. But, when I attempt to do this, it doesn't work. My goal is to take this 50 page PDF document and save each page separately as a PNG file.

I open up the document using PREVIEW on my Macbook Air 2022 M2. Then I LEFT CLICK on Page 1 and choose EXPORT AS. When the screen pops up I click FORMAT and choose PNG. Then I change the name of my saved document and hit SAVE. Then I LEFT CLICK on Page 2 and do the same as Page 1.

Then I go to that saved PNG document and it's ALWAYS saves as the First Page. I do this 20 times, once for each page, 1 - 20, and it's always saved as the First Page. Basically, I have 20 copies of Page 1.

Can anyone explain this or come up with a fix?
