Automatic Import of Photos

I have a Mac Studio running Sonoma 14.1.2. Canon's software for working with photos no longer works (EOS Utility). So instead of connecting my camera, I'm forced to resort to inserting the SD card, which automatically begins to import every photo on the card. I don't want to import 64 Gb of photos, I want to select the photo to import. Photos doesn't let me do this. Basically, the machine is useless for photography. I've read all the instructions, advice and replies in other similar questions and they don't work. I am an experienced IT professional with 35 plus years experience and the OS and the machine simply don't work (or if they do it's only in through a kludge).

The only thing I can say is that when I insert a SD card the Photos app does NOT automatically start to import. I’m given the option to import all photos on the card or just recent ones. From the link provided by Crucader188

Import from a card reader or SD card

  1. Insert the card into your computer’s SD card slot, or connect a card reader to your computer and insert the card into the card reader.
  2. In Photos, choose File > Import, then select the photos or videos you want and click Review for Import.
  3. Note: If you participate in an iCloud Shared Photo Library, click the Library pop-up menu in the toolbar and choose the library to import into.
  4. If you selected multiple photos or videos, do one of the following:
    • Import all new photos: Click Import All New Photos.
    • Import a selection of photos: Click the photos you want to import, then click Import Selected.
  1. If a message asks whether you want to delete or keep the photos on your card after importing them, click Delete Items or Keep Items.
  2. To cancel importing, click Stop Import.
  3. When all photos have been imported, eject the card from your computer or card reader.

Imported photos appear in the Imports and Library albums in the sidebar.

It certainly seems to indicate you can select what photos you want to import.

And here’s a link about disabling automatic importing.
