How do you properly re-attach keys on a late 2019 Magic Keyboard?
I just finished ATTEMPTING to fix sticky keys on the A.M.K. that shipped w/my late 2019 iMac. There was some soda in there, and after using alcohol and drying it a year or so ago, a few of them were still sticking. So I finally decided to 'simply pop them off', clean them, and 'snap them back on' again. Those quotes are there because my reality was nothing like the fantasy. NONE of the videos or tutorials I found showed instructions for keys like those on my Magic Keybd.
Inside each key (on mine) is a rectangular metal 'bar' that rests in a metal hook-hinge. The problem I'm having is, trying to properly fit the top edge of the underside of the plastic key into the plastic scissor. I must've tried 15X!! Each time I snapped the key back on, it laid flat w/NO springback.
I was able to clean and eventually restore the 'Caps Lock' and 'TAB' keys so that they work, but they are clearly lopsided, which makes me think each top hinge is only 50% correctly fitted on each key. The top of the keys (underside) do not have crab snaps. They are more like little 'pockets' that seem to want to fit AROUND the tiny tabs on the scissor. If you simply snap them down, they miss their mark entirely and the key lies flat w/no bounce. It looks like they want to go on from each side, moving from out to inward. Yeah. Try that.
I've been in IT for decades, and usually w/enough time and patience, even stuff I haven't been officially trained on becomes clear w/enough gentle perseverance. But this was one of the most frustrating fixes I have ever attempted. The best I could figure out, I held a thin wire (core of a .050" guitar string) under the top of the scissor to hold it up, and replaced the key starting from the top down on each side.
If you have a METHOD, one that WORKS, for replacing Apple Magic keys that have the metal hinge bar inside, PLEASE SHARE.
It's possible the entire scissor has to come out, be assembled to the key first, and then pushed back into place as a whole. But I'm in no mood to try that.
