Connecting 8th gen iPad (iOS 17.2) to MacBook Pro (macOS 13.6.3) - display not found

I have a newer MacBook Pro running Ventura 13.6.3 and I'm trying to use my iPad (8th gen running iOS 17.2) as a second monitor. The iPad will show in the Mac's Finder, but is not a choice when going to System Settings > Displays. (Perplexedly, the neighbors' devices show, but not the iPad that is two inches away.) After reading that Apple took away the ability to connect wirelessly, I have foregone attempting any of this over Bluetooth. I've tried using each of the USB ports on the Mac, I've tried resetting all manner of location/privacy settings, I've tried rebooting several times, I've ensured both the Mac and iPad recognize and trust one another...I just can't manage to use the iPad as a second monitor. Does anyone have a novel idea?
