No TV subwoofer output through ATV 4K

Using 2 latest version HomePods and Airplay 2 subwoofer. Works great watching content from my latest version ATV 4K. However, when watching content from my TV (with the ATV 4K connected to the eARC input on the TV and settings set to allow TV sound through the ATV 4K) only the HomePods play sound with no sound from the subwoofer. Why? Am I missing a setting or is this not possible?

When using the Apple TV box as audio processor on (e)ARC for other TV sources, then audio output will be through HomePod speakers only, not other AirPlay speakers.

Use HDMI ARC or eARC with your Apple TV 4K - Apple Support
