Connecting Projector to MacBook Air

I have a Sanyo projector connected to my MacBook Air via VGA/thunderbolt. The computer is recognising the projector, and the screen display is altered, suggesting that the two are speaking to one another. However, try as I might, I cannot get my computer screen to appear on the projector. Any suggestions please? I need to have this sorted by Monday. Many thanks. I am using Monterey.

Might try running the projector in extended desktop mode, rather than in mirroring mode, so that the MacBook Air's screen and the projector can each operate at their own resolution.
