Bootloop after sonoma update -2020 intel MBP

I have a 2020 Intel Mac book Pro. I have updated to Sonoma from v14.0 and since then I am stuck in a boot loop.

The installation goes fine, then it launches. Internet does not work and when I reboot, I am stuck in a boot loop, or booting just stops at 60% or so. I have tried disk utility in recovery (no issues), mounting/unmounting in recovery, and the various common key presses at start to reinitialise some stuff, and tried the reinstall through recovery. None of this work. While in the boot loop I can still start in safe mode but obviously it has very limited functionalities.

I do not have a recent back up. My data seems accessible in safe mode.

In Case that is an important context, there is a bootcamp partition with windows.

i had put the error message in chat gpt to analyse and it was saying there was a problem with a USB device. None are connected at any point in the installations etc and I cannot tell if this is an accurate assessment.

do you guys have any options for me? I could not lose data as I have a lot of personal stuff etc.

thanks so much for your help!

Assuming you've already tried the standard 'common keypresses' and the Apple hardware test, try these:

  • Make sure no USB or any other peripheral is connected
  • Boot into safe mode
  • Remove any invasive or system apps that might be causing a problem
  • Try reboot

Still a problem?

  • Boot into safe mode
  • Grab a copy of your data by copying things to an external disk. Usually your home folder is enough.
  • Reboot into the installer, use disk utility to completely wipe your hdd
  • Install again

Let us know how you go.

Hi,

I had the same issue last week.

After trying all possible system safe boot, system repair and so on, the ONLY WAY was finally to totally reset the MacBook and process a clean re-install (in my case, both macOS and Windows10 BootCamp).

Fortunately, during the preceding days, I installed a 2d Mac and transfered all my data, apps & setting from this MacBook. I was therefore able to retrieve them from this second computer, which made the process fairly straightforward. But it was still a waste of about two days' time.

I have a 2019 Mac book pro and got the same boot failures after a while after upgrading to Sonoma. Till now (I have 14.5 (23F79) installed) the problem has not been fixed. I also installed Sonoma new on the computer, and the problem kept showing even without installing any third party software.

It seems that it has to do something with the graphics adaptor. Every time I connect or disconnect the external monitor, the screen freezes. Also, when it goes to sleep it stays black. The computer has a Touch Bar and sometimes it seems to work, be pressing a virtual key the key changes color to indicate that its pressed. But the main screen stays black. It is like the os is still working on the background but there is a failure in the screen...

When I try to boot up the computer I get the apple logo and the bar and after some seconds it shuts down and starts to boot up again. Then I get the error page that says there was a problem - press any key. This cycle continuous until sometime the boot up procedure is a success. If that happens, the computer works perfectly.

The boot up failure cycle can carry on till 2 hours. It varies.

This week I found out that if a have the external monitor connected and the power cable not connected it will have some boot up failures but in not more that 5 minutes it will boot up successfully.

I hope this is a software problem and with the new os version it will go away. It is a shame...

Any Third Party Applications that will interfere with the normal operation of the OS,  is an invitation for disaster.

Certain Applications maybe available on the Apple Apps Store - this only means the Developer is prepared to pay Apple a portion on each sale.

Any of the below should be removed as per Developers Instructions

Disk Cleaner

Third Party Security Software

Other question, if I do a Time Machine back up, and if I restore it in a clean install I guess it would replicate the issues if I load that back up?

If you do in fact restore form a Time Machine Backup and use Transfer to a new Mac with Migration Assistant and choose the Resort ALL

Yes, it will Re-Introduce to same issues that existed when the Backup was made back into the otherwise Pristine Installation

Obviously I want to make a clean wipe only in the last resort.
