Screenshot problem

I am using Sonoma 14.1.2. At some point the screenshot app developed an issue that leaves the screen display altered. The only way to return the screen display to normal is to restart. For example if I select the portion of the image I want to capture, specify the destination and select record. The image is saved to the desired location.

The screenshot image that I submitted is of this post. If you scroll around you will notice the darker area around the selection. There are no bounding box handles on the screen after the screen shot is taken

However the screen is displaying the "selection area" correctly but the surrounding area is darkened. I cannot

remove it to allow the screen to correctly display the entire page correctly. I have tried ESC without success. If I select another app such as Finder - Finder is displayed with the selection normally but the remainder is greyed out.

This has never occurred in the past. I tried to remove the SS option to retain the last selection without any change. That option was very useful if you are selecting any portions of an image in the same location.

This frustrating having to restart the computer when you want to return the screen to normal display.

Anybody else experiencing this problem. This is a recent development.
