Apple Mail - outgoing server settings

I use Apple Mail to manage my Verizon/AOL mail and recently switched my settings from IMAP to POP for incoming mail (so I have the ability to delete emails off of my Mac). Incoming mail works fine. My problem is outgoing mail does not. I am using server name smtp.aol.com. User name and password for my Verizon/AOL email, port 587 and selected Use TLS/SSL. I have tried everything but it keeps saying Cannot send message using this server. Not sure what else to try. Any suggestions?

I have very similar problem - was not able to add new smtp server for ougoing (oubound) mail and I am unable to modify server properties.

I have successfully added a new server when using server description in upper case letters, i.e. using SMTP instead of smtp. The rest of the description may be in lower case letters. You need to go to Mail settings ... / Modify list of SMTP servers. I mean server description, not the host name.

Strange, but this helped in my case.

Anway, be careful while entering server details. I am not able to change them. If I change the server details, such change is valid only till I close the Mail app. There is clearly some bug in the system.
