Windows 10 not showing Iphone over USB

ok this one is odd... if i connect my iphone (ios 17 etc) then it shows right up on an up to date win 10 machine with no issues to access photos etc.

My sons iphone (ios 16) connects to the same computer and iTunes sees it, it shows up in device manager, but not as a mounted USB device to browse images.

There is a windows log error from when he got the machine and i guess it is possible that the permissions on HIS phone got messed up... but i cannot figure out how to reset/redo that process.

Any Thoughts?
