Shutting Off Advanced Data Protection in Sonoma

I wanted to initially turn on this function (Advanced Data Protection), but I seemed to have some trouble with it. In the Apple ID>ICloud screen, I saw that the I was able to toggle this on. Later on I see that my documents folder is empty. Not sure if it had to do with it, but I tried to toggle Advanced Data Protection off, but it now says that "it uses end to end encryption, Your Apple ID settings need to be updated so this device can use end-to-end encryption." Which would seem to say that it isn't on, but the toggle says it is on. And I seem to have lost access to my files, at least those in my Documents folder which was part of my Icloud storage. But in Finder, my available storage is the same as it was before. How can I unwind this to get access to my Documents again.

MacBook Air, macOS 14.2
