Cardav authentication message for Yahoo contacts on iPhone

A Cardav authentication message pops up on the iPhone intermittently saying that a password is required. The issue is that my uncle (the user) is wedded to using Yahoo for all his reminders and calendar entries so Yahoo has to stay on his phone. He has everything synced through iCloud, but because he is using the web-based Yahoo calendar and reminders, the only way to get those onto his phone is to have a Yahoo account logged in on his phone for those two features.

Yes, the ideal solution is to stop using Yahoo and move everything over to Apple, but at 84, he's not going to change. Can anyone help save my sanity and suggest a solution for this?

It sounds like your uncle is encountering authentication issues with the CardDAV service linked to Yahoo on his iPhone. This could occur due to incorrect login credentials or intermittent connectivity problems. Here's a step-by-step guide to troubleshoot this:

  1. Ensure that the Yahoo account credentials (username and password) entered in the iPhone settings for Contacts (CardDAV) are correct. Go to Settings > Passwords & Accounts > Yahoo. Tap on the account and re-enter the password.
  2. If the problem persists, try removing and re-adding the Yahoo CardDAV account. Go to Settings > Passwords & Accounts > Yahoo. Delete the existing CardDAV account and set it up again by selecting "Add Account" > Other > Add CardDAV Account. Enter the correct Yahoo credentials and server information.
  3. Yahoo might require an app-specific password for third-party apps or older devices. Access the Yahoo Account Security settings from a web browser and generate an app-specific password for the iPhone's CardDAV service. Then, use this generated password in the iPhone's settings for the Yahoo CardDAV account. You may have enabled Authenticator for Yahoo --> Generate and manage third-party app passwords | Yahoo Help
  4. Ensure that the iPhone 6 Plus is running the latest available iOS version. Sometimes, updating the software can resolve compatibility issues and bugs related to account services. Update to iOS 12.5.7 —> iPhone 6+
  5. If the issue persists despite trying the above steps, reaching out to Yahoo support for further assistance might be necessary. They could provide insights or solutions specific to Yahoo's services and settings.

Given your uncle's preference for Yahoo and the need to maintain his calendar and reminders, these steps should help address the authentication issue. If the problem persists, Yahoo's support team may offer more specialized guidance.
