iTunes stuck on "Syncing iPhone (Step 3 of 5) Preparing to Sync" when trying to sync iPhone to new Win 11 laptop

iTunes Version 12.13.1.3, iPhone 12 128GB iOS 17.2, directly connected to laptop via Apple Lightning to usb-c cable, Win 11 ver 23H2 (OS Build 22631.2861), 32 GB RAM.

Since getting my new laptop, I have tried to sync iPhone via iTunes. Whenever it's a backup or a sync running, iTunes will get stuck at "Syncing iPhone (Step 3 of 5) Preparing to Sync". Under iTunes in Taskmgr, I can see 4 Console Windows Host, distnoted(32 bit), iTunes, MDCrashReportTool (32 bit), MobileDeviceHelper (32 bit), MobileDeviceProcess, Runtime Broker, and SyncServer.exe (32 bit). I've run through the diagnostics in iTunes, and the only issue it finds is "iPod support service is not installed". None of the troubleshooters seem to resolve that. And iTunes will sit on "Stuck on Syncing iPhone (Step 3 of 5) Preparing to Sync" indefinitely, if allowed. And yes, the computer is trusted, and I'm logged into the iTunes store.

I've seen on the internet where doing an "endtask" on MDCrashReportTool will move the sync process to completion, but nothing ever syncs. It essentially ends the process.

Short of wiping my phone and starting all over, is there any other recommendations to get by the "Stuck on Syncing iPhone (Step 3 of 5) Preparing to Sync" phase?

I solved my problem. I had an Apple Watch paired to my iPhone. I had gotten rid of the watch, but never unpaired it. After unpairing the watch everything syncs okay now. Lesson, if you get rid of the watch not only remove it from your devices you also need to unpair it from your phone!!! Life is back to normal.

Yay, thank you! I had the same problem syncing my iPhone 15 Pro to an old Mac running High Sierra, which used to work fine but for weeks has gotten stuck "Preparing to Sync" at Step 3 of 5 since giving away my old iPhone and AirPods Pro. Per your tip, I went into Settings -> Bluetooth, selected circle-i info on my old AirPods Pro, and chose "Forget This Device". After reconnecting my new iPhone to my old Mac, iTunes Sync immediately worked to completion!

I have the same problem. I did open task manager and stopped the process MDCrashReportTool. The first time it essentially just stopped the syncing process. I restarted iTunes then restarted my iPhone 12 pro max. synced my iPhone and when it stopped and stage 3 i opened task manager and ended the MDCrashReportTool process. My iphone then synced properly including some new music I selected. But, I agree thats not how i should sync my music. this started right after the last update to iTunes.

I saw in another thread, iPhone - Stuck "Preparing to sync" when… - Apple Community, there renaming MDCrashReportTool.exe was a solution, I cannot do this as the path is under C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\AppleInc.iTunes_versioninfo_\AMDS32. And no amount of rights adjustment will allow you to rename the file.

I had previously tried the trick of not syncing my music (unchecking), and then syncing (rechecking), but that didn't work. For some reason, doing that again today fixes it. Music is starting to sync after killing MDCrashReportTool.

There has to be a better way, Apple.

I tried unpairing the iWatch from my MacBook Air to do an iPhone backup and it worked as well. I can't understand why Apple makes a sync reliant on the iWatch settings. The only problem is that a few settings in the watch need to be reset like the passcode. Not a deal breaker, but they really need to be on top of this and get a patch done quickly.
