Consistent inability to add recovery contact on latest MacOS, iPadOS & iOS

I cannot add a recovery contact to any recent device I own, including M3 Pro MacBook 14" (OS 14.2), iPad mini 6 (OS 17.2), and iPhone 13 Pro (OS 17.2).

INTENT

I want to add my wife's AppleID as my recovery contact. Note that she was able to add me as a recovery contact, though that was over a year ago.

RESULT

iPad/iPhone simply fails with no alert or error; MacOS fails with error: "Settings Error - Extension process Apple ID(1483) exited" (also got a "...ID(1527)" error).

THINGS TRIED

  • MacOS: System Settings > Apple ID > Sign-In & Security > Account Recovery > Recovery Contact + button > Add Recovery Contact button > I enter my device password. Then a brief empty modal appears with a feedback animation which disappears after 2 seconds. I can hit the Add Recovery Contact button again which always does nothing. Then hit that button AGAIN and the Settings Error appears (see attached image below) .
  • iPadOS/iOS: System Settings > Apple ID > Sign-In & Security > Account Recovery > + Add Recovery Contact > Add Recovery Contact button > FaceID entered. After that the Add Recovery Contact modal slides down and nothing else happens. If I select + Add Recovery Contact again, the same nothing happens.
  • Restarted devices.

On the Mac, download and run (free) EtreCheck and share the result to the clipboard. Then open a new reply here, and press the Additional Text button that looks like a printed page to get a text input box big enough to paste the hardware and software configuration report here, and paste and post that here.

On the iPad, remove (delete) the add-on security apps, force restart, and try again.

Also restart your local network router / gateway /network firewall, as sometimes those can get tangled. Check for firmware updates for that box, too.

Unfortunately, too often add-on security apps can tend to be closer to malware in this current era. Some of the better known add-on anti-malware for macOS was caught selling personally-identified web browsing and web purchasing data, for instance. And too much of the add-in security is just badly written and insecure. Yes, adding anti-malware and other security apps means adding potential vulnerabilities, as vulnerabilities in the security apps themselves can be targeted for exploitation. First-few-hops VPNs badly solve a problem that hasn’t existed for a decade or so, but are perfectly positioned to collect (and re-sell?) personally-identified metadata, too.

The ID number shown is a process ID. Those change as processes are created. Which happens lots.

EtreCheck is free for this purpose. Not paid.

I’d prefer Apple offer a similar tool of course, but they don’t.

The tool is not getting spammed around here, and I receive no considerations for suggesting it.

It is useful for avoiding a few thousand questions about the current macOS configuration.

An add-on VPN is often accompanied by other app add-on issues, hence the inventory suggestion.

Thanks SO much for the super speedy reply, MrHoffman!

On my iPad, I did have VPN installed plus non-tracking privacy apps that use VPN-style profiles. I removed all of the profiles/apps from the iPad and restarted.

RESULT: Nothing changed and no contact could be added just like before.

I didn't try the iPhone, figuring the same would happen.

On my new Mac, I don't have VPN profiles installed nor anti-malware, nor cleaning apps (I had CleanMyMac X which migrated from my previous MacBook, but I carefully removed all of its files).

There was a slight difference however: after the enter device password step, the 2-second empty modal with the feedback animation appeared properly as a password field for my Apple ID account. Yet, after entering the password, the nothing happens and the same error results after selecting the Add Recovery Contact button twice. If I try again, the Apple ID password field modal just appears with a feedback animation for 2 seconds then disappears exactly like before.

RESULT: I still can't add a recovery contact.

I tried booting in Mac Safety Mode, but that didn't help.

Regardless of Safety Mode, I keep getting errors with different ID numbers (like 886 and 1004). Seems like the ID number is different each time I try.
