I know when I've sent a laptop to Apple to be repaired by one of the Apple mail-in repair depots, the shipping box has some sort of bag to put the laptop into. It can protect the outside of the laptop from marring and can act as an anti-static shield to protect the electronics. I would imagine a Trade-In would be handled in the same way. I know Apple always has instructions in the box even when we are mailing them in for repair. Did you receive any e-mail confirmations from Apple which may also have included instructions?
