Apple delivery date claim vs actual UPS delivery date ?

Hello All

According to Apple, my MPB was shipped on Dec 13th and supposed to be delivered today [Dec 19th].

As of right now, UPS status says "Your package is in transit, we're updating plans to schedule your delivery.

The delivery date will be provided as soon as possible."

After some digging it looks like it's coming from Shanghai ???

Why wouldn't it just ship from a warehouse here in Canada ?

I did a custom upgrade from 8 > 16 GB but surely that wouldn't be done from China.

Or is everything "just in time" and this is the way things are now ?
