The Photos.app is a part of the system software, just like Mail or Contacts. To update the Photos.app, you have to update the system.

If you are getting messages, that the Photos.app needs to be updated, there are three possible reasons:

  1. You may be trying to start Photos using an outdated icon in the Dock or an old alias on you desktop, linked to an older version of Photos restored from a backup. To be sure you are using the current version of Photos, installed by your system version, open your applications folder and drag the Photos.app from there to the Dock. Or launch Photos directly from Applications.
  2. You may be trying to open a Photos Library that has been opened by a more recent version of Photos. In that case you can no longer open the library with the older version of Photos and you need to update your Mac to the same version of macOS that has been used to update the Photos Library.
  3. You may be getting the warning that you need to use a different version Photos, if you are trying to open very old photo libraries, created by iPhoto or Aperture. After you upgraded to macOS 13 Ventura or macOS 14 Monterey, the Photos.app can no longer open iPhoto and Aperture Libraries. Now we can only import photos and videos from iPhoto Libraries or Aperture Libraries into existing Photos Libraries. This is very lossy, as we will lose the albums and folders. you need aMac with an older system version to migrate iPhoto or Aperture Libraries.

Does any of this apply in your case? What are you trying to do, when you are seeing the warning about updating Photos? You may want to quote the warning message literally, so we can see, what kind of message you are getting.

Perhaps it is a warning about updating or upgrading the Photos Library and not about updating the Photos.app at all?
