Unknown icon on my iPhone

White upside down reel to reel symbol on black background in left upper corner keeps appearing does anyone know what this means

I was puzzled by this too. Turns out it is an icon for ongoing Live Voicemails. If you click on it while the icon is there, you will go to an active transcriptions of the voicemail.

So yes, the icon is like a recording of two reels of tape, like a cassette tape. And it indicates voicemail.


Apple should really update this article to include that new icon. It (Live Voicemail) is apparently turned on by default on iOS 17 and later.
