How to unlock an iMac

I have an old iMac that I'd like to have disposed of, but there are some files I need off the computer. But when I try to logon, I get a screen with a locked icon and inputting the password does nothing to open the computer and allow it to boot up. What do I do?

Did you set a firmware password, and then forget it?
