I have an old iMac that I'd like to have disposed of, but there are some files I need off the computer. But when I try to logon, I get a screen with a locked icon and inputting the password does nothing to open the computer and allow it to boot up. What do I do?

Thanks for the advice. But why would I need to bring a receipt for a computer that is probably about 8-9 years old and which I brought home from my job? I will see about taking the computer to an Apple Store, but it’s Xmas time and it’s not that big a deal. Thanks again.
Bringing the receipt is Apple’s requirement; I am just relaying what their Support document says.
Why they would want proof of ownership should be self-evident; but if you want to know their reason, ask them.
