Sonoma 14.2.1 Update Audio Output Bug?

My Mac mini 3.2 GHz 6-Core Intel Core i7 updated to Sonoma 14.2.1 over night. When I began using the machine this morning the audio did not appear to be working - no sound. MS Teams had no sound, videos on social media had no sound. Not even alerts played. The speakers on this Mac mini worked perfectly before the update.

Looking into the Sound Panel on System preferences I discovered this Mac mini was no longer listed as an output source. It listed the "Display Port" as the output. My display doesn't have speakers (see screen shot attached). In the screen shot you'll see a Mac mini listed and Airplay as the source. That Mac mini is an M1 that sits next to this machine. When choosing that as the source for audio output all audio from the i7 plays out of the M1. WTH!!! Please help or fix this update. The M1 has not updated yet. I will do my best to NOT let that happen until this is resolved.

Same thing happened to me, in the system settings for sound it wasn't recognizing my MAC MINI as an output device. It only recognized my monitor which doesn't have any speakers. I shut down the system and even turned off the power strip. After waiting a few minutes I unplugged the monitor from the HDMI port on the MAC. I turned on the power strip and restarted to MAC. I had to wait a couple of minutes to make sure the MAC had restarted since I was flying blind with no monitor. Then I reconnected the monitor to the MAC and this time when I went to the systems setting it showed both the monitor and MAC MINI as output devices. I selected the MAC as my device for sound and the problem was resolved. This was a great relief since some of the recommendations that I had read here involved rolling back the OS update from a time machine backup which would have been a real pain.

Same issue, in which the audio inputs and outputs stop working. Thus, no more iTunes, Zoom or Teams. This issue was confirmed by my company’s outside IT consultants who advised that another user of theirs had identical issue. The “fix” was to rollback the Mac iOS by erasing the entire Mac and then reinstalling Ventura (not Sonoma 14.2.1.).

I just updated my MacBook Pro 2019 16-inch and have the same issue. My internal audio no longer works. External speakers and my AirPods work, so that's the workaround for now. But this is frustrating. How do you release a patch and not catch something like this? And how come it's taking so long to issue a fix? Also, they need to make an easy way to roll back an update if there are bugs like this.

After this issue occurred, I was using my AirPods connected to my MacBook Pro so I could hear sound. I even briefly connected it to an External Speaker. I worked a few hours this way then took a break. I reopened my computer this evening, and I forgot to connect my AirPods. As I was working I suddenly realized I was hearing sound again through my internal speakers. I have no idea what changed or why it started working again. I restarted my computer to see if the sound would break again, but it didn't. So now it's working and I'm not sure how it happened. I don't know if connecting my AirPods, or the external speaker (via USB) did something that corrected the issue or what, but it's working now.

Updating the above issue:

THE ISSUE WITH THE i7 MAC MINI HAS STILL NOT BEEN RESOLVED!!! The M1 Mac mini mentioned above has been updated to 14.2.1 and appears to be functioning as expected. However, the Mac mini 3.2 GHz 6-Core Intel Core i7 still isn't registering as having "Built-In" speakers. It does in fact have built-in speakers. As stated above, the i7 worked as expected prior to the 14.2.1 update.

  • Could this be a firmware issue on the i7?
  • Both machines (the i7 and the M1) are connected to the same monitor via a switch. Could this potentially be a problem.
  • The i7 recently had to be wiped clean at the Oxmoor Apple Store (prior to the 14.2.1 update). We started over with everything. The i7 sound output appeared to function as expected prior to the 14.2.1 update.

Does anyone else have this or a similar problem?

I just updated to Sonoma 14.2.1 on my Macbook Pro two days ago and my sound control, which worked perfectly before the update, no longer adjusts the volume. When I alter the sound level either up or down, nothing changes in the least. I only use the internal speakers. The output controls are fine and the Mute button is not ticked. This is clearly a glitch that Apple needs to fix right away.

Hi LADadLA, hmmm look like you got this ‘fixed’. I was also thinking to roll back to last version but unfortunately once I go to ‘disk manager’ and erasing old drive, after this I can see only ‘Sonoma 14.2.1’ option to go back. Some how I was not using that “Time Machine” feature.

I am also open for ‘factory setting’ but still facing same issue as explained above.

any help over this will be highly appreciated. Thanks

UPDATE: My laptop's audio control now is working some of the time. It can still stop reacting when I adjust the controls, but it is definitely better than it was. If I'm watching YouTube or streaming, the audio controls for those usually work. But I swear that I'm burning through battery faster than I was with the previous processor.
