How to Update Shipping Contact in Apple Pay

I am trying to make a purchase in the Target App using ApplePay via my iPhone. I keep getting a message that says “update shipping contact”. I’ve followed all the guidance I’ve found.

Settings > Apple ID (your name at the top) > payment & shipping > address - edit as needed

  1. Go to settings>Wallet & Apple Pay>transaction defaults>address - update as needed
  2. Go to Wallet app>tap on any card>tap three dots in corner>tap address - edit as needed for all cards
  3. Go to settings>Apple ID (your name at the top)>payment & shipping>address - edit as needed.

I even tried shutting down my phone and restarting. Nothing works.

Hello all! I will give the CORRECT answer to this problem that doesn't seem to have been solved or is just given with vague to little information. I discovered this by accident and on my own when struggling to purchase something online myself (no thanks to Apple customer service!).

So when you are in the process of an online purchase and the Apple Pay screen comes up, on top it will show your primary card first, then a box right underneath it that says "Add Name." THIS is where you "Update Shipping Contact." You MUST click on this box, which there should be a blue arrow located on the right end side of this box.

  • When the "Add Name" box has been clicked on, type in your first and last name, email address, along with your phone number (there should be nothing else it asks of you to fill out). (Edit: for some this box may say "Add phone number" instead and that is fine as it is still the same place)
  • Next, you must "check off" each section where you entered in your information, simply by clicking it, which will show a blue checkmark next to it.
  • Once this is done and all blue checkmarks have shown up, you may back out of this screen and it should no longer give the "Update Shipping Contact" message but instead show the amount owed and the fingerprint to use Apple Pay!

Thank me later and not the useless and unhelpful Apple customer service team (they will not help you with this as they themselves do not even know what is causing this issue. They will pretend to act like they know what they are doing, give you the runaround, transfer you to different departments, put you on hold, and have you change your address in settings and in x, y, z locations on your phone which will have NO effect at all, then have you restart your phone and promise to call you back but never actually do)!

So I was having the same issue, and found this thread on the community forum. Even after removing the Target rewards cash, it was giving me the Update Shipping Contact message, but I was on the shopping cart screen instead of the checkout screen, and there was a space here that asked me to provide my phone number. That wasn’t there when I was in the check out screen on the Target app.

I went back into checkout, added the Target Circle cash, and tried checking out with the same Update Shipping Contact error, no phone number option. I backed out to the previous screen, the Cart screen, and looked over my order. It showed the Target Circle cash this time since I had added it during the Checkout process, and I had an Apple Pay button to the right of Checkout. I clicked Apple Pay instead of Checkout and got the Update Shipping Contact error with an option to add my phone number. Once I selected my phone number, Apple pay went through with the circle cash. So it is possible, just with a convoluted way to get there.

I’ve found that the only way I can use Apple Pay in the Target app is to NOT try to use my Target rewards, i.e. $10 or $15 gift cards for purchasing items Target gives rewards for, like Woolite and Tide laundry detergent. I even chatted with a customer service rep and he apologized but could not fix my issue. I just purchased without using the rewards that Target gave me for shopping at Target …. seems like they freely give them, but don’t actually want you to use them! Once I deleted the rewards from my cart, my Apple Pay worked just fine. Instead of spending $44 on my cart, I had to complete the order without the gift cards, making it $69 instead. Which honestly sucks.

Same thing happened. I use Apple Pay on Target app. Weekly. Suddenly needed shipping info. For a pickup order. Did ALL the things. Nothing. Went online. Logged in to Target. Clicked Apple Pay there. Worked. But I deleted the app and went to bring it back. Would not allow Apple Pay as an option though it clearly states it. Grrr. I honestly hate buying from companies that don’t have an Apple Pay option. I don’t want to enter cc every time nor do I want every company having cc on file. Get with the times.

YES. This was the right answer! True to form, Apple Support had no idea what the problem was, sent me to several departments, had me waste an hour at work going through needless steps and sending them screenshots, schedule multiple call-backs, only to call at the wrong time and immediately hang up, as if I was meant to be helping them. (I've had two of these extended round-robins with Apple's "senior support engineers" over the years, and both times it was a user that ultimately figured out the problem.)

The hitch in this giddy-up is that Apple's own instructions are exceedingly confusing (apparently even to them.) The shipping address for Apple Pay is located under your User ID Settings and reentering that info, as the prompt seems to suggest, does nothing. At the same time, the name and addy associated with your card continues to appear in the payment window right where it's supposed to, suggesting that all should be well!

But that's not what the OS actually wants. Despite appearing to ask for a shipping address, like a particularly disordered partner what it actually wants is for you to click on the "Add Name" option. And it wants this even though your name is already clearly visible and obviously confirmed. So you enter your name, number and email again in this mysterious box and voilà.

Trillion dollar companies get so insecure when they hit their late 40s.

So this was happening to me as well in the app when I would combine my gift card + target circle. I was trying to place the order for drive up on the app but I kept getting “update shipping contact” no matter what I did it still did not work. The only way I could use Apple pay with my gift card + target circle is if I payed with Apple Pay on target.com
