Problem installing iTunes

Yesterday I was unable to open iTunes after repeated attempts, so I decided to go into Settings and uninstall it and then download and reinstall. There are 2 users on our laptop, so I repeated this process for the other person. Then when I download iTunes and then try to open the .exe file to reinstall the software, I get an error message saying "1 or more users on this computer have installed iTunes from the Microsoft store. All users must uninstall iTunes before this installation can continue." Now this time I downloaded iTunes from the Apple site rather than from the Microsoft store, but I don't know why that would matter.

What should I do? Thanks.

You might try https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/topic/fix-problems-that-block-programs-from-being-installed-or-removed-cca7d1b6-65a9-3d98-426b-e9f927e1eb4d.

Hopefully this can clear up any registry cruft from the previous installations that is blocking your current install. Failing that see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates - Apple Community. If you cannot get the installer itself to work you might be able to unpack the components (e.g. using 7-Zip) then install each from the .msi packages.

For reasons known only to Microsoft and Apple the Microsoft Store version of iTunes isn't compatible with multiple profiles. iTunes itself isn't totally happy with multiple profiles (see Authorization vs. association - Apple Community) as association of one Apple ID on the computer can prevent the other user downloading past purchases or accessing an Apple Music cloud library. Regardless you are probably better off with the direct download from apple.com.

I already downloaded the software from Apple, but for some reason Windows 10 won't allow me to install it as it insists there are other users who installed it, when in fact I uninstalled it from both user accounts. Is there some other step I need to take in File Explorer? I looked there and saw that I still have some iTunes folders, but they consist of my music files and album artwork only, which I don't want to delete for obvious reasons.
