Why does the facial recognition to unlock the screen on my iPhone 12 stop working periodically?

I bought this iPhone 12 two years ago and recently have had some problems with facial recognition to unlock my screen. What causes this? My iPhone and account are up to date.

Try this --> A smudged or dirty front-facing camera lens can impact the accuracy of Face ID. Ensure the lens is clean and free of any obstructions.
