Doesn’t boot

Mac mini late 2014 hangs midway through booting, on apple logo screen about 50%.

My MAC is stuck with the Apple logo and progress bar Came to my MAC this morning and it appears to be midway through an update. But it’s stuck. I’ve rebooted. I’ve rebooted from the net via the Option-Command-R option. It loaded fine and came back up but was in Safari mode and wouldn’t do anything else. So, hoping that it had installed a whole new OS, I chose the reboot. Back to the same place Apple logo and the progress bar. Stuck again in the same place.
