Airtag lost in yard

One of our dog's airtags is lost in the yard. It's been missing for about 5 months now. It's really hard to hear the sound in our backyard. It gets drowned out very quickly by traffic, wind, dogs, etc. We even brought out a metal detector to try and locate it to no avail. We're still connected, but we're beginning to lose hope that we'll ever find it. Any suggestions?

Does this AirTag still appear on the Find My app on your iPhone? Do you have an iPhone 11 or newer model? If so, and if the tag's battery is not depleted, you may be able to use Precision Finding with your phone to try locating this tag.

For that to work, your phone needs the following enabled:

  • Find My
  • Location Services
  • Precision Finding
  • Bluetooth

Since the AirTag will broadcast, via Bluetooth, every 3-5 mins, your iPhone would need to be within Bluetooth range (~30-40') to capture that signal broadcast.

Finally, might it be possible that your dog either damaged (chewed) the tag ... or, worse, ate it?

We found it! Oh and it was chewed on! I noticed when I was in the backyard today that the weather had shifted and the traffic sounds were decreased. The only time we've ever heard the beeping was at night. It's still quite light out, so I ran in for my phone, we coralled the dogs, grabbed the trowel, and we had it in hand in less than a minute. What a pain this was! While it was chewed on, the case is in great shape. There's no indication of low battery.

Actually, it does. See if the following support articles can help:

Precision finding's "Find Nearby" may not appear on your phone if the AirTag is not within Bluetooth range of it. You may need to walk around your entire backyard to get it within that range. Also, if the tag's battery is depleted, Find My will not work at all.

It does appear on the app. It was somewhat quiet and we were out again tonight listening for the beeps, but we still could not find it. The beeping was audible. Not loud, but audible.

So frustrating. I wish my husband had an iPhone too I think it would make it easier. I assume it was chewed up pretty well as my two dogs like to fool around with each other.

We don't disagree with you. We already have both of our dogs chipped. One of our dogs is a special needs pup. We were just so terrified of losing him again after he escaped from a daycare site when he was 5 months old. We swore it would never happen again! He stays home now. I think we'll reattach our airtags to our key chains,
