Once you open a notification you cannot retrieve that notification on the Home Screen. Now can someone explain why there may be multiple notifications from the same app? Whether it be recent or hours in between I figured notifications from the same app would be stacked but recently I noticed Instagram gave me a notification than 3 hours later another separated one…. Yes other notifications had appeared in between but I always thought that each app notifications would appear stacked on the Home Screen and not completely separate being they are the same app…??

When it comes to retrieving past notifications on an iPhone, the historical record is limited within the iOS/iPadOS system. Notifications are typically stored for a maximum of 7 days, meaning that any attempt to look further back into the past beyond this timeframe would not yield results. Unlike some data logs or archives that retain information for extended periods, iOS/iPadOS prioritize recent notifications, allowing only a week-long window for users to access their notification history. This short retention period can be both a convenience and a limitation, as it ensures a more manageable and clutter-free notification center but also imposes a constraint on accessing older notifications for reference or review.

Even within the limited 7-day window that iOS/iPadOS retains notifications, if a user actively clears or dismisses notifications manually, those cleared notifications might not be retrievable, regardless of the time frame. Once a notification is consciously removed by the user, it's essentially erased from the history, and the system won't retain any record of it, even if it falls within the 7-day retention period. This aspect underscores the user's control over their notification history, allowing for a more personalized and streamlined experience but emphasizing the importance of promptly attending to or saving any essential information received via notifications before they are intentionally cleared.
