Find My on Apple Watch not working. “Friends data not available.”

My Apple Watch is first gen. I got it recently as a hand me down, and since pairing it to my phone it has not let me connect to find my. When I try, the screen says “Friends data not available. Please verify your network connectivity.”

I have:

1) Reset the watch, unpaired and paired the watch.

2) Checked wifi status.

3) Made sure location services on both my watch and iPhone were on.

Because my watch is older, I don’t think I can go into settings and click on my name to find the watch under devices.

Any help would be appreciated!
