To update your credit card expiration date on your iPhone, follow these:
To update your credit card expiration date on your iPhone, follow these:
In case it hasn’t been answered, I went into settings, under Apple ID, Payment & Shipping, (make sure you have a secondary form of payment such as PayPal or another debit or credit card even if temporary that is set up to take over for all your subscriptions just for a place holder for the seconds it takes to enter your new card info.), choose the card that needs replacing and delete it, once this is done and you are back in the Payments & Shipping screen choose Add Payment Method and either use the camera to scan your new card or enter the card info manually. If you want or need to you can go back and remove the secondary or “place holder” payment method you added right before the deletion and addition of the debit or credit card/account in question.
I hope this has helped.
Use your wallet app instead of your settings! I was having this issue as well. My card expired but while in settings, I could not update the expiration, couldn’t delete the card, and couldn’t add one with a matching number. In the wallet app, I was able to remove the card and add the one with the updated expiration with zero issue or delay.
True, the system does not let you update your card expiration date. But I could not enter the same card with updated expiration, and you can't just delete your card to start over. You have to add another card first, then delete the old card, then add updated card. Clunky.
I had this same frustrating issue! What worked for me was to add my Apple Cash as a payment method (I had a small balance - this might not work if you have no cash balance available), which allowed me to delete my expired card and re-enter it.
This is ridiculous though, do better Apple.
You have to add a secondary card, delete the card that was expired then add the new card. Don’t forget to delete the secondary card unless you want to keep as a secondary. This is exactly what I had to do.
I just did that...Added the new card with the same number and new date, then deleted the expired card. It worked and I was immediately billed for Apple services.
I agree, Apple needs to improve this process and allow updating the new date and security code.
I had the same problem! So frustrating! What I finally figured out was that I could connect my PayPal account with my same credit card (updated expiration date). I connected that, deleted the expired card, and then re-added my cc with the updated expiration date. it worked with only having one cc!

If I remember correctly, you can't just edit the expiration date.
You have to Add the new card with the new expiration date and then Delete the old Card with the old expiration date.
...but you can't add a "new" card with the same card #, and you can't delete the old card because you need to have a card on file. I think you have to add another card, then the updated original card and delete the backup card. Not a smart move by Apple.
So, multiple posters have indicated they could not do what I did, which was add the new card with the same CC number and new expiration and security code before deleting the expired card. I cannot swear to it, but I believe I performed this task using the Apple Wallet app on my iPhone as opposed to using my iCloud or iTunes account. Perhaps that is the key to the discrepancy. I believe I used the Wallet app because I remember taking a photo of the card to enter it.
There is no “expiration date” field to update.
Glad it worked for you. When I tried that way, the site said that I couldn’t delete the expired card as I had to have a card for the family plan. Maybe the difference in approach is due to the family plan?
I am having this same issue, but the responses above have not solved it. I have 1 credit card. That card is listed in apple pay and has recently expired, even though I have a new card with the same CC number that doesn't expire until 2028.
When I try to remove the card it says "Unable to Remove. Family organizer requires at least one payment on file." However, when I try to add the card as a new card, it gives me the error, "This payment method has already been added to your account." and it won't allow me to add or edit or update the card.
So I cannot update my card expiration date manually. But I cannot delete the old card without adding my new one, and I cannot add my new one while the previous one is still listed on the account as a payment method. This is frustrating. Help!
Same issue, my card has the same number, but I have a new card with new expiration and cvv, there is no field to update expiration and cvv. I can’t delete the old card because there are active subscriptions , and I can’t add the same card again and then delete the old one because it says you can’t delete old card. So check mate, I don’t have another credit card for this purpose. Whatya want me to do dear Apple?
