Mac upgrade

I have an IMac which has hit the 10 year old mark, and is incapable of OS updates.

The consequence of this is the incompatibility of application packages like Photoshop etc.

I need to upgrade my hardware. Can you please offer solutions.

I need a large 27 inch plus screen for fine art photographic work. Can I utilize the existing IMac screen, since I understand IMacs no longer come with screens.

Should I be going the laptop route?

All iMacs have always had screens, and still do.

The current iMac line is all 24" screens. Apple stopped making the 27" iMacs some years ago. But if you really want a 27" iMac they are still available used. Check OWC, they usually have really good used iMacs. I have purchased used iMacs from them and they are nearly perfect. If you look for a used 27" iMac, look at the 2019 & 2020 models - they will have the longest forward lifetime vis-a-vis future versions of macOS.

Also, depending on the specific configuration, the combination of a Mac Mini + Apple 27" Studio Display can come in at a lower price than a similarly configured 24" iMac.

Not sure where you got that idea from all iMac models come with screens.

This is a current iMac:

Screen is 24" diagonal.

Macs without screens are the Mac Mini, Mac Studio, and Mac Pro.

You can get an external 27" screen for use with any of them.

No, you cannot use your old iMac as a screen for a new Mac of any type.

Do you want to get a Laptop?

Is portability important? If not, then there's no reason to get a laptop.

I would suggest a Mac Mini with a good monitor for around 1200 bucks total will give you a good setup, comparable to your current iMac.

Hey there!

As MartinR said, all iMac computers come with a built-in display. Are you still interested in a MacBook (laptop), even though you need a 27-inch or larger display?

How much memory and storage does your current Mac have? You can find out from About This Mac, available by choosing About This Mac from the Apple menu  in the upper-left corner of your screen.

How many accessories or other peripherals do you have connected to your Mac? Do you have a second display you'd like to keep?

Please let us know of any other upgrade requirements.
