I just purchased a song from iTunes, downloaded it (several times), went to settings - ringtone - clicked download (also several times). The song still doesn't appear there. Help)

Songs and ringtones are completely different formats. You will either need to download it as a ringtone, or use a program to convert the song to the M4R format.You can use Garage Band to convert it or look in the App Store for a converter program.
