I have a 2023 iMac with Sonoma 14.2.1 and a MacBook Air 2015. I've read horror stories about printer compatibility. My HP 4630 will not come on. I've unplugged it and gone through all the online suggestions I've found...Nothing. I'm going to replace it. What are your suggestions for a replacement? I'd like to stick with an HP all-in-one inkjet.

I say replace with an Epson, Brothers or perhaps Canon.
The newer AirPrint models do not require drives to work with your Mac's.

FWIW I just had to refill our two year old Epson Eco-Tank and we've printed thousands of documents and hundreds of photos.
I recommend any of the Brother Printers, they have dels with USB or Ethernet, besides Wifi....

While the Eco-Tanks cost a little more up front, the saving of not having to purchase expensive ink cartridges every few months, has more that paid for the initial cost.

Only if the printer manufacture supplies and continues to supply drives for USB printing.

Fickle is a poor description of the problem.
If you need help? Then you will need to provide detailed information about the Mac, the Printer, the Router and the Problem.
