Buying books with gift card money loaded on iTunes acct.

I wanted to purchase an ebook as a gift for my spouse, that they can read on their iPad.

I followed the instructions on the back of an Apple iTunes gift card...go to iTunes, hit Redeem & enter the code. Great.....but....

it now appears on my iTunes acct as "Balance", but when I go to the Apple Books app, no Balance appears under "Acct"; the only options to purchase the ebook is with a Credit Card, or PayPal!

Help!
