Buying books with gift card money loaded on iTunes acct.

I wanted to purchase an ebook as a gift for my spouse, that they can read on their iPad.

I followed the instructions on the back of an Apple iTunes gift card...go to iTunes, hit Redeem & enter the code. Great.....but....

it now appears on my iTunes acct as "Balance", but when I go to the Apple Books app, no Balance appears under "Acct"; the only options to purchase the ebook is with a Credit Card, or PayPal!

Help!

Make an iTunes purchase without using a Gift Card balance? I have a gift card balance but I don't want to use it on this particular purchase. When I make the purchase will I be prompted to choose a payment or is iTunes going to automatically take it from my gift card? I searched in Account/Manage Payments and the gift card is at the top of the list and while the order of other credit cards can be changed, Apple will not allow the order of the gift card to be changed, nor will Apple allow a credit card to be placed above the gift card. Thanks if anyone knows.
