When I try to erase the disk the erase button is grayed out and I am unable to click it, what do I do?

I just got a pre-owned Mac mini late 2014 and am trying to do a full reset, but I cannot click erase under disk utility because it is grayed out.

You can not erase the disk that you are started up from. You must startup in macOS Recovery Mode and use that to erase and then reinstall the macOS. see > Use macOS Recovery on an Intel-based Mac - Apple Support
