Connecting bluetooth mouse with macbook air

This is a macbook air with OS 13.6.1. Bluetooth mouse battery went dead so it stopped working.

I recharged the mouse battery.

I have not been able to get the macbook air to connect with the mouse. The mouse was listed as a bluetooth device in the System Settings/Bluetooth window and I tried several times to click "Connect" but it did not connect.

I did "Forget this device" and have tried to reinstall the mouse and connect. The macbook air does find the mouse, but it does not connect with it.
