Pair Apple Pencil 1 with Apple iPad 3rd generation troubleshooting

I can’t seem to get my Apple Pencil 1 to pair with my iPad 3rd gen. It worked for a while but how can you tell if pencil is fully charged? When I click Apple Pencil under Bluetooth I get “Apple Pencil Not Connected Plug in Apple Pencil to use it with this iPad” the pencil doesn’t fit fully into my iPad port so I bought an Apple USB-C to Pencil (1st Generation) Adapter and use a cord which plugs in perfectly to my iPad. But there’s no way to tell if the Pencil is charged/charging and I don’t get any message to pair it.

There is an iPad battery widget you can add to your iPadOS that should show battery levels of any Apple devices connected to the iPad.

The 2017 iPad Air 3 uses the Lightning connector port and the Apple Pencil 1st gen needs to be directly connected to that port for the Pencil 1 to both pair and charge through the iPad Air 3.

The adapter you need to use with the Pencil 1 is the older Lightning to USB adapter that will work older USB to Lightning cables or newer Lightning to USB-C cables for charging the Apple Pencil 1 to an older Apple or Apple compatible power block that uses older USB or the newer USB-C power adaptor blocks.

You may need to purchase this older adapter from a third party source, like Amazon.

Best of Luck to You!
