It's entirely possible the Amazon adapter does not permit the pairing process. While the Pencil connects using Bluetooth, the adapter allows the iPad to detect the Pencil so it can then pair to it over bluetooth.

You need a special adapter not available with previous releases of the first generation Apple Pencil. Apple sells the special adapter on their online store.

The Apple Pencil Adapter cannot be used for charging. As such, given the "test" that you describe, this might suggest that your Amazon Adapter is not suitable.

The Apple Pencil Adapter is relatively low cost - and is explicitly designed to properly charge and support pairing of a 1st Generation Pencil with your iPad.

Phil, you are quite correct. My reply was ambiguous.

While the cited Apple Pencil Adapter is required to charge a first generation Apple Pencil, I had intended to indicate that the Adapter cannot be used to charge other devices. As such, the "test" conducted by the OP with the Amazon-sourced Adapter, to demonstrate compatibility with another device, was invalid.
