External monitor showing no signal when connected to macbook air

I am trying to connect a second monitor (LG HDR 4K) to my new Macbook Air (Apple M2). The computer does recognize the second display when I go into settings but the second monitor only shows "no signal."

I am connecting the monitor via HDMI cable + USB-C adaptor which I have plugged into the Thunderbolt 4 port.

I have no trouble connecting the second monitor to my older Macbook Pro (using the same HDMI --> USB-C convertor) so I know that the screen does work.
