List of Compatible Graphic Cards?
Dear community,
I need to replace the graphics card on my MacPro 4,1 (Early 2009). Would anyone know where to find a comprehensive list of compatible cards?
Thanks!

ATI was bought by AMD at around the time these cards were popular, so you may find those Brand-names used interchangeably. The apple article refers to the card I suggested as:
it is a quieter, better-behaved card than the much hotter 5870, and slightly more capable than the LOUD 4870. in contrast with those other two, the 5770 requires only ONE Aux power cord.
The only reason it is not shown for your model Mac is that it can not run the MacOS Base System (for installer and disk Utility direct from the DVD) which is at most 10.6.3 -- its drivers were introduced in 10.6.5
--------
NVIDIA cards are not supported after 10.14 Mojave, as Apple and NVIDIA could not agree on sharing technical data or providing Drivers in a timely fashion. Linus Torvalds, the force behind Linux, used a remarkable number of swears (even for him) when referring to NVIDIA ability to support their cards.

the Apple-firmware version of the AMD 5770 is about the best bet for most purposes. it is readily available on the used market.
Be sure you get the Apple-firmware version. The standard PC version does not show boot-up screens, and that is a pain.
Thanks Grant. In the meantime, I found About graphics-card compatibility between Intel-based Mac Pro models - Apple Support, which lists NVIDIA and ATI Radeon HD, but no AMD, so thanks, I hadn’t found the info on the AMD 5770 you recommend. (I’m in Europe, availabilities may differ a bit over here, so I’d still be interested in a comprehensive list but it may very well be that such a list doesn’t exist, I know.)
Thanks again!
