Cannot turn off Snapping; Cannot use multiple timelines

I've tried the various things recommended by others in the community regarding this problem: ...View/Snapping (does nothing); start a new project (only one timeline available with no snapping; others snap and destroy what is on the bottom timelines); insert black image on a timeline between that of the soundtrack and images (helps with one timeline, but snapping occurs at other timelines). It appears that iMovie is now only available for one sound track and images starting at the beginning of the sound track (can't start images anywhere but the beginning) and there can be no other timelines and no space between images. Is that what iMovie is now? Years ago, I used iMovie a great deal without these issues, but only returned to it recently, only to find it either severely limited or significantly changed without documentation (I've been through recent Apple tutorials) to navigate those changes. Am I missing something? Is this just a way to prompt sales of Final Cut Pro?

The clips in the main timeline automatically slide together, as if they are magnetized. That feature cannot be changed.

Clips inserted into the upper timeline can be moved about freely and do not snap together.

To have multiple audio clips, you can line them up one after the other. Or, your can pull them down separately into a lower audio well. There are several audio wells.
