Apple Pay - Card Expiring Message when it's not

Rec'd 2 emails in the past week stating that there is an issue with my credit card setup for payments.

Tried to make an in app purchase and it popped up saying "your credit card is about to expire" asking me to login to update Apple Pay settings, but once I'm in there it won't let me add new card in order to remove and add back the one they say is expiring. (it doesn't expire until 2026)

I fixed my problem with payments, in a text conversation with Apple here is what we found:

  • on my iPhone 12, running 17.2.1.
  • I went to: Settings/AppleID/Account Settings/Purchase History
  • We found an "unpaid" purchase (my was to an app)...I selected that "unpaid" purchase
  • It said that it was "unpaid" because my credit card had expired (which we all know it wasn't)...but then asked if I wanted to "relink" or "link" (I don't recall the exact wording) the credit card payment method in my AppleID to my Apple Wallet. I selected "yes"....and it "relinked" to my Wallet. All of the red text turned to black.
  • I agreed to pay the "unpaid" purchase and....presto! Everything worked again.
  • The Apple person I was texting seemed to understand that the "expiring credit card" was a bogus error message; the cause of the problems was this "unpaid" purchase.
  • I have no idea why the purchase was "unpaid"...not sure what went wrong the first time. It was a valid purchase request, so nothing funny going on here.

I hope that works for others.

I had the same issue. The response below from Pitt5323 worked to fix the issue.

  1. Go to Settings
  2. Click on your name (Apple ID, ICloud+....)
  3. Click on Media and Purchases
  4. Click on View Account
  5. Click on Manage Payments
  6. Click on the card you have linked to apply payment. It should show expired.
  7. Remove the card from Manage Payments screen
  8. Re-add the card to Manage Payments screen by clicking on the Add Payment Method.

Just to clarify here’s what I did…

under the “organizers” ID under settings….Go to settings, click on your iCloud name at the top, click on “media and purchase” vs. “payment & shipping”., “view account”. Then “manage payments”.

Click on the card you have linked to Apple Pay and remove the card from here. Once done then re add the card from here

OK THIS WAS MY FIX....

I GOT ANOTHER WARNING ON MY PHONE - IT FINALLY LET ME REMOVE MY CARD on my phone BUT WOULD NOT LET ME ADD THE SAME CARD WITH A NEW EXPIRATION DATE because it said it had expired (which it had not.

SO I DID THIS THAT WORKED!!!!

I got on my laptop and went to

https://appleid.apple.com/account/manage/section/payment

This will take you to

Payment and Shipping - Media Payment and Purchases.

It said I did not have a card on file and

I put in my info.

Obviously - make sure you put the billing name your card and use the 4 digit year.

And....shazam!!!!!! My nightmare of a month is finally over!

Apple immediately sent and email that my info had been updated.

I thought about going to desktop because I just couldn't erase the existing card (that of course was not expiring)

Now, my final thought. Lately banks have been reissuing expired cards with the same account number but a different expiration date. I'm guessing this is the real problem. I could be wrong but the above worked for me.

Temporary fix. I added money to Apple Cash, set it as my payment method, and deleted the card I had set up as the original payment method. Maybe it’s better this way, as Apple has overcharged my card in the past and it has been impossible to get them to refund. This way they’re limited to the funds in Apple Cash. I wish Steve Jobs was still alive…
