Upgrading from Mojave to Big Sur

Hi,

I'm running my IMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2017) on Mojave. The last time I tried updating to catalina a couple years back, I ran into lots of trouble (even after cleaning up the entire disk) & Apple online support couldn't be of much help.So I gave up & finally went back to Mojave. However I definitely need to make an upgrade due to the plugins & softwares I am having & more over Safari is giving is not working causing me to uninstall it.I'm just wondering if I can now try again this time to update to Big Sur.Any ideas & tips on how to go about will definitely help to make the install a success.

Thanks

iMac 27″ 5K

Creating a backup is a fundamental prerequisite, even if you were not contemplating an upgrade: Back up your files with Time Machine on Mac - Apple Support.

Then, consider using EtreCheck. A description and download link are here: How to use the Add Text Feature When Posting Large Amounts of Text, i.e. an Etrecheck Report - Apple Community. It may identify certain problems that should be addressed prior to upgrading.

Be advised a 2017 model iMac can be upgraded to Ventura, which is more recent than Big Sur.
