Transitions in Upper Time Line not Allowed?

I can set up transitions in the middle timeline (the lower of the two video tracks), but when I attempt to drag a transition to the upper track, I am prevented from doing so. Is this by design? (and is there a reason?)

Yes, it’s by design. Transitions in the upper time line are not allowed. I don’t know Apple’s reasoning. I would think, though, that connecting the clips with transitions would impair the ability to move the clips freely.

If you move your cursor over a clip in the upper time line, fade handles will appear in the upper corners. You can slide the handles to impart fades to the beginning and end of the clips. Holding down the Option key while sliding the handle allows one to operate the handles independently of each other.

You can also create a separate project, add transitions the to the clips in the main time line, then export out and import into your original project, adding it to the upper time line.

I mainly use Final Cut Pro which is the "professional" version of iMovie.

Did you know that you can download a 90 day FREE trial of FCP with no strings attached . . . just click the DOWNLOAD button.

Final Cut Pro - Free Trial - Apple (UK)

What is more, you can use it almost permanently as whenever it is updated you can download the new version and have another 90 days! Of course if the updates are more than 90 days you would be without it for a while.

The FREE version of Davinci Resolve is at least as good as FCP . . . probably better and although complicated you only need to learn the bits that apply to you.
