Upgrade to “hi-res”: “Remove Download” or “Delete from library” ?

I want to upgrade my music library (purchased items) to high resolution lossless quality. What is the best solution ?

  1. “remove the download” or “delete from library” ?
  2. Does a redownload from the iTunes “purchased” section guarantee the upgrade to high res lossless quality (download setting is already configured to that quality) ?

thanks for your help as the info provided by Apple is unclear.

Hi,

Firstly, I suggest that you backup your existing music then select remove download.

If the music is available as lossless or hi-res , you can select download. Bear in mind that such downloads have DRM and will only be available as long as you have an Apple Music subscription.

iTunes Store purchases in general will be available for re-download if necessary as 256 Kbps AAC. Matched tracks can also be re-downloaded as 256 Kbps but only before subscription expires.

Apple is offering a service that allows you to access music on their servers whilst you have an active Apple Music subscription. One of the benefits of this service is to allow you to upgrade your existing music collection to lossless or hi-res. You are not required to upgrade your existing library but if you do you only have access to this as long as you have an active subscription. This is why you should backup your original library so that you can revert to this when your subscription expires.

Many thanks! That’s helpful.

In some cases, iTunes offers only a redownload of the original “Low complexity” version ? To get the hi-resolution version, I have to “add” it to my library using my Apple Music subscription, which means this updated version will disappear at the end of my subscription.
